The Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation and the Nevada Tennis Association are proud hosts of the Muterspaw Championships, the only national junior tennis tournament in Las Vegas. This tournament is open to boys and girls in the "12 and under" to "18 and under" divisions. To promote local participation, one wild card entry into the main draw of each division of the Muterspaw is offered to Las Vegas players who accumulate the most points in three specific local tournaments. The Muterspaw Championships was first held in 2001, initiated in memory of Jason and Josh Muterspaw, who had a love for the game of tennis and were childhood friends of Andre Agassi. Both brothers lost their lives tragically but this tournament represents the commitment these brothers had for the sport of tennis and remembers two wonderful people.

Jason and Josh Muterspaw started playing tennis at an early age. Jason was 10 and Josh was 6 when they began competing at the local and sectional levels. But by age 11, Jason started competing on the National level and at age 12, so was Josh. Jason and Josh learned much more from tennis than skills of the game. It taught them many of life's lessons at an early age, such as self-discipline, communication skills, independence, fair play and sportsmanship. Josh Muterspaw was ranked No. 1 in the Boys 18's division of Southern Nevada. Jason Muterspaw was ranked No. 1 in the Boys 14's, 16's and 18's of the Intermountain section. Jason and Josh loved tennis and were given many awards for their accomplishments. They received sportsmanship awards, Nike awards, and High School All-American titles.

Josh had played through his first year of 18's when he was diagnosed with adrenal cancer in 1993, at the end of his junior year in high school. In August 1994, at the age of 18, Josh died of cancer. Jason went to the University of Utah on a full tennis scholarship and was named all WAC (Western Athletic Conference) his freshman year there. He later returned to Nevada, attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to be closer to Josh after he was diagnosed. In 2000, Jason was killed in an automobile accident at the age of 28.

Jason and Josh's memory continues to live on in various ways. Josh has an annual sportsmanship trophy awarded by the Nevada Tennis Association and Jason, a once avid golfer, has a charity golf tournament in his honor where all proceeds go to the Candlelighters Foundation. Furthermore, a new elementary school in Seven Hills has named their gymnasium after the two brothers and the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation has initiated the Muterspaw Championships as well.

Each year, the Agassi Foundation donates $10,000 of the tournament's proceeds to a scholarship fund, named in honor of the Muterspaw brothers, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In addition, a portion of the money raised will go to the Nevada Tennis Association (NTA) for the Muterspaw Travel Grant, a grant for ranked junior tennis players in need of financial assistance to travel to sanctioned NTA tournaments.

The vision for this tournament is best conveyed by Andre Agassi, "We hope that the Muterspaw Championships will encourage junior tennis players to become the models of sportsmanship and dedication that Jason and Josh exemplified."
